Why do I keep supporting Cruz Azul even though
they don’t win anything at all?
The truth about it all is that I don’t know. I was born on the year of
1998, and the last time this Mexican soccer team won a championship that is
worth remembering was on 1997. So I haven’t seen my team win anything at all.
Some people say I have a tendency to masochism, and they might be right,
but the truth is that there’s not a weekend I’m not concerned about the
performance of this team. There have been lots of times that they have
disappointed me, or that just bad luck comes around.
The first time I saw Cruz Azul suffering from bad luck was in 2008, when
I was completely conscious of what soccer meant. By that time Cruz Azul counted
with a lot of good players and they owned the tournament, anything different
from the championship was a complete failure. They arrived to the final round
and their opponent was Toluca, a team who was characterized for their excess of
roughness and defense insecurity. It was a really complicated game for both
teams, so complicated they almost get to the penalty strikes. Cruz Azul was
dominating Toluca’s territory and almost at the end of the match the first “Cruzazuleada”
took place. A very talented player, named Cesar Villaluz, was kicked by one of
Toluca’s players, a nasty guy named José Cruzalta. This was one of the most violent
actions I’ve ever seen in soccer, Villaluz lost consciousness for a while and
was taken to a hospital immediately. And that was not the crazy part of this,
the referee decided to do nothing about and continued the game as usual, even
though it would have been a penalty kick for Cruz Azul and the possibility of a
championship. Eventually, Cruz Azul lost the final in the penalty strikes and
began with a record of bad luck difficult to understand for anybody.
Since the day they won their last tournament, they have arrived to 9
finals, and lost them all in the weirdest way possible. It looks as if they
wanted to upgrade the level of weirdness every time they get to the final
stage. They have increased drama substantially, reaching a point of
incredibleness so high, that no one gets to understand how they do it. Some
players even need psychological treatment, like Alejandro Castro, the guy that
scored in his own goal in a final against America, Cruz Azul’s most hated
rival.
So, why do I keep supporting this strange team?
The truth is I don’t know, maybe I’m a masochist after all. ;P
Great job! I know the feeling. The Giants had never won a world series since they moved to SF from NYC in 1958. It took 52 years to finally win one and boy was it sweet!
