What's the most american city?- Alex Quiroz

Every city has a feel to it, something special and unique that it and its habitants expel. An identity that sets it apart from the rest of the country and even the world. Whenever there is the question of what is the most American city, a lot of places come to mind. The most popular places are Texas, the Southern States (Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, basically most rednecks in the country), the northeast corner and even the Midwest. I think that the city that reflects what America was built on and I is being preached to stand for right now (whether it does or not is something else) is the city of Philadelphia, you know, brotherly love, PHILEEEEEEEY, every name that comes to mind.

First of all, on Philadelphia, it is located on the state of Pennsylvania, one of the 13 original colonies and home of the stereotypical Midwestern lifestyle. Philadelphia was also the first capital of the United States as a Nation before the planning and building of Washington D.C, and is now currently home of the almighty and great Philadelphia: Eagles, 76ers, Flyers, and Phillies in the sports of Football, basketball, hockey and baseball respectively. And I´ll be the first to admit, the city is on a rough spot, all these teams are rebuilding and have no foreseeable success, but that’s where the spirit of the city comes into play.

There is no citizen body son resilient, so tough, and so humble than in this city. They are the crowd that had to go through the Chip Kelly Fiasco, the all-center lineup by the 76ers, and the championship drought for the Phillies. Yet they are still optimistic and always look forward to the next season (at least we’re not Detroit), always keeping up the city as a powerhouse on the sports world and making it worth it to stay there as a franchise.

The main statement of this text has been revolving around sports, I know, but I don’t see a more relatable way to foreigners than sports regarding the American way of life. I would also like to finish this by a recommendation: If you want to know the closest feeling to what it is to be, live, and make part of Philadelphia, watch Rocky. There is no better synecdoche of Philly than the life and people surrounding Rocky as well as himself. An Italian immigrant (second or third generation) who wants nothing more than becoming a professional boxer, when he is given the opportunity, he works himself up to the limit to make the best of it. Like the once the founding fathers did to build a country in that same place, just exactly 300 years ago.
